19 die in UP liquor tragedy

Lucknow, Jan 13 (IBNS) At least 19 people died on Monday while 80 others were admitted to hospital after they consumed spurious liquor in several villages of Malihabad on the outskirts of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

Police said one person had been arrested after crates of same liquor were recovered from his possession.

The state government has also suspended 16 people, including a sub-district magistrate, 9 officers of the excise department and 6 local policemen.

A departmental enquiry against the Joint Excise Commissioner has also been initiated.

The state government has announced  Rs.2 lakh as compensation for each of the  bereaved family.
