New Delhi: At least 20 Indian soldiers were martyred in a violent face-off with China in Galwan valley in Eastern Ladakh, according to Army sources.  There were 43 casualties in the Chinese side, a report said.

At least 17 soldiers who were injured critically at the standoff and exposed to sub-zero temperature succumbed taking the toll to 20, the Army said in a statement.

Earlier reports had said that the already heightened tension between India and China escalated further as an Indian Army officer and two jawans were killed during a 'violent face-off' with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley.

"The Indian Army is firmly committed to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation," the Army said in a statement.
