23-year-old woman gives birth at polling station while voting in Karnataka assembly elections
New Delhi/IBNS: A 23-year-old woman gave birth at a polling station in Karnataka's Ballari on Wednesday while exercising her right to vote in the state assembly elections.
As per the Election Commission, the woman received assistance from female voters and officials present at the Kurlagindi village polling station, reported PTI.
As of 5 pm, the voter turnout for the Karnataka assembly elections was 65.69%.
The highest turnout was recorded in Ramanagara at 78.22%, while the lowest was in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) South limits at 48.63%, according to election officials.
The state is seeing a three-cornered contest between the ruling BJP, the Congress, and Janata Dal (Secular), led by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.
For the first time in Karnataka, home voting was provided for octogenarians, persons with benchmark disabilities, and individuals suffering from Covid-19.
Over 80,000 senior citizens, 19,279 persons with disabilities, and 15,328 essential service personnel in the state registered for home voting.
The Election Commission reported that a total of 94,931 senior citizens and persons with disabilities cast their vote from home.
The EC introduced home voting for those 80 years and above and those suffering from Covid-19 post the pandemic. The facility has been used by voters in various states.
