6.8 quake hits Indo-Myanmar Border Region, Kolkata Metro service halts for sometime
Kolkata, Apr 13 (IBNS): The Kolkata Metro service was temporarily stalled after earthquake tremors were felt in the city on Wednesday.
According to officials, a moderate intensity earthquake measuring 6.8 on Richter Scale hit Myanmar - India Border Region with tremors being felt across several Indian cities on Wednesday, officials said.
The epicentre of the quake was located at latitude 23.0 degrees north and longitude 94.9 degrees east and at a depth of 134 km.
USGS, however, termed the intensity of the quake at 6.9 on the Richter Scale.
The earthquake occurred at 19:25 hrs (IST).
In Kolkata, several areas of the city felt the tremors and a scary atmosphere has been built as a result.
People rushed out of buildings and many were seen blowing conch shells in Kolkata.
Although no report of any destruction has been reported so far but a severe crack has been formed in the walls of Kolkata Metro tunnel.
Tremors were also felt in Indian cities like Patna and Guwahati.
