New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Shelly Oberoi was elected as the new Mayor of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday.

In the mayoral election which was held at Civic Centre in Delhi today morning, AAP’s nominee Shelly Oberoi got 150 votes while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee Rekha Gupta trailed at 116 votes.

Just after the election result was declared, Oberoi thanked the people of Delhi, AAP MPs and Councillors and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and said, “We will work for the development of Delhi.”

The new mayor has been elected in the fourth attempt as the civic body had previously made three attempts to hold the mayoral election process- on January 6, January 24 and February 6- but could not succeed due to ruckus in the MCD House.

Congratulating Shelly Oberoi on her win, Kejriwal tweeted and said, “Today the people of Delhi won in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and hooliganism has been defeated. Congratulations to the people on being elected mayor of @OberoiShelly.”
