Gandhinagar, July 27 (IBNS): Within hours of resignation, three Congress MLAs joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, media reports said.

Three former Congress leaders, Balwantsinh Rajput, Tejashree Patel and PI Patel, joined BJP at the party headquarter in presence of President Amit Shah.

After the resignation of Shankersinh Vaghela, three of Congress's senior legislators in the Gujarat Assembly resigned on Thursday giving a major blow to the party.

The shift to the BJP camp by the Congress MLAs will benefit the saffron party in the upcoming Rajya Sabha poll in the state.

The BJP has already announced the names of party President Amit Shah and Union textile minister Smriti Irani for the RS poll to be held on August 8.

The Congress has 57 legislators in the 182-seat Gujarat Assembly. It needs the support of 47 for its candidate to win.
