All bank accounts of Congress have been frozen, alleges Ajay Maken

New Delhi/UNI: The Congress on Friday alleged that all its bank accounts including that of the Youth Congress’ have been frozen ahead of the Lok Sabha election and termed it as a deep assault on India's Democracy.

Addressing a press conference here, party leader Ajay Maken said, "We got the information yesterday that the cheques that have been issued by the party were not being honoured by the banks.

"Upon investigation, we were told that the country’s main opposition party’s accounts have been frozen."

He alleged that the Income tax requested a recovery of Rs 210 crore from the Congress party and the Youth Congress.

The party does not have access to the crowd funding funds. The main opposition's accounts are blocked just days before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections and “it's like freezing democracy”.

"The funds have been raised by the workers of the Congress party through online donations. Neither Income Tax nor the Modi government can freeze it. This was an attempt to bring 'one party system' in the country," Maken said.

Maken said, "Not Congress but BJP’s accounts should be frozen, because the corporate bonds that they have been deposited into their accounts have been termed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court."

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on X said. “Power drunk Modi Govt has frozen the accounts of the country’s largest Opposition party - the Indian National Congress - just before the Lok Sabha elections”.

"The UNCONSTITUTIONAL money collected by the BJP would be utilised by them for elections, but the money collected by us through CROWDFUNDING shall be sealed!" Kharge said.

He also threatened to hit the streets of the country and fight strongly against this autocracy.
