New Delhi/UNI: The Delhi government on Saturday announced to cancel all Delhi state university examinations, including the final exams, in view of major disruptions caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Addressing a digital press conference here, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday. said the upcoming exams of all the universities of Delhi state stand cancelled.  Now, all the students will be promoted to the next semester.

''No classes are being taken in the Corona pandemic, and there is no proper online education system. It is then unfair to test the students who are already under tremendous stress due to the coronavirus situation,'' the Deputy Chief Minister said.

While announcing the Delhi Government's decision,  Sisodia said the students will be awarded degrees based on the assessment criteria set by the university.

''Students from other semesters have been promoted without taking the exam, in the same way students from the last semester should also be given degrees without having to appear for the exams.

''We cannot discriminate against the last semester students,'' he said.

''Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also written a letter to the Centre requesting it to cancel the examination in all its universities,'' Mr Sisodia added.

Earlier in the month, the University Grants commission (UGC) had mandated that all universities should conduct their final semester and final year exams at the end of September and not before that.

The UGC said its decision to not scrap the final semester and final year exams is based in academic prudence and need for maintaining credibility.
