Assam assembly polls: Congress announces candidates for 40 constituencies

Guwahati/IBNS: The Congress on Saturday night released the first list of candidates for 40 assembly constituencies in the first phase of three-phase Assam assembly polls.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora will contest from Gohpur seat while six sitting MLAs of the party have also gotten party tickets.

Sitting MLA Nurul Huda will contest from Rupohihat seat while Rakibul Hussain will contest from Samaguri seat, Rupjyoti Kurmi from Mariani, Debabrata Saikia from Nazira, Roselina Tirkey from Sarupathar, Durga Bhumij from Doomdooma seat.

Former minister Rajib Lochan Pegu will fight against Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Majuli.

Former BJP MP Ram Prasad Sarma who joined Congress last year will fight the election from Barchalla seat while Benudhar Nath will contest from Dhekiajuli, Dr Anuj Kumar Mech from Tezpur, Abhijit Hazarika from Rangapara, Praneswar Basumutary from Sootea, Anjan Borah from Biswanath, Sibamoni Bora from Batadrava, Prasanta Kumar Saikia from Kaliabor,.

Bismita Gogoi will be in fray from Khumtai, Bitupan Saikia from Golaghat, Bani Hazarika from Dergaon, Rana Goswami from Jorhat, Pallabi Gogoi from Teok, Ankita Dutta from Amuri, Suruj Dehingia from Mahmara, Sushil Kumar Suri from Sonari, Sushanta Borohain from Thowra, Subhramitra Gogoi from Sivasagar, Bhupen Kumar Borah from Bihpuria seat.

In other seats, Dr Joy Prakash will contest from Lakhimpur, Sailen Sonowal will fight from Dhemaji, Dr Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu from Jonai, Pranjal Ghatowar from Moran, Rajkumar Nilanetra Neog from Dibrugarh, Manoj Dhanowar from Lahowal, Dhruba Gogoi from Duliajan, Atuwa Munda from Tingkhong, Pranatee Phukan from Naharkatia, Ajoy Phukan from Chabua, Sibanath Chetia from Digboi, Manoranjan Borgohain from Margherita and Lakhin Ch. Chetia from Sadiya.

The Congress party has yet to announce its candidate for Titabor assembly constituency, a seat that was represented by former Assam Chief Minister late Tarun Gogoi.
