Assam Congress demands govt's clarification on credibility of NRC
Guwahati/IBNS: While the BJP-led Assam government said that, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) authority will start the process of issuing the rejection slip to over 19 lakh people excluded from the final NRC list from March 20, the opposition Congress has demanded that the government should first make clarifications whether they accepted the NRC or not.
The Assam government on Monday said in the Assam assembly during the ongoing state budget session that, the NRC authority plans to start issuing rejection slip to over 19 lakh people excluded from the final NRC list from March 20.
Replying to a written query by Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said it on behalf of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who also holds the Home and Implementation of Assam Accord portfolio.
According to the Assam minister, work related to scanning of speaking order is going on and about 88 percent work has been done so far and after completing the work, there is a plan to issue rejection slip from March 20.
Earlier, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government has rejected the present NRC.
Former Assam Chief Minister and senior Congress MLA Tarun Gogoi said firstly the government must say that they accepted it (NRC).
“I don’t know whether the Assam government and centre accepted it or not. First, they must declare that NRC is accepted and after that, they must give the rejection slip. The left out people will get an opportunity so that they can go to the court to prove their citizenship. But, according to me, those are genuine citizen, whose names are in the voter list, their names should come automatically. Why they should be harassed?" Tarun Gogoi said.
He claimed that, out of 19 lakh people who left out from the final NRC list, about 12 lakh are Hindus.
“The BJP government has now deprived their own people and the majority are Hindus while they talk about Hindutva. We want that, the NRC should be verified and corrected. I took up the matter with then CJI Ranjan Gogoi. We want an error-free NRC where all genuine Indian citizens' names should be included and all foreigners should be excluded,” the former Assam Chief Minister said.
The rejection slip will mention the reason why the person’s name was not included in the NRC list.
The final list of NRC was published on August 31 last year by leaving over 19.06 lakh people.
The complete list containing 3.11 crore inclusions and over 19.06 lakh exclusions has been uploaded in the official website of the NRC State Coordinator following order of the Supreme Court.
