Assam: District Sports Officer caught red-handed for accepting bribe

Guwahati, Sept 4 (IBNS): The sleuths of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption branch of Assam police on Wednesday caught a government official red handed while accepting a bribe amount Rs 30,000 from a person.

The arrested government official was identified as Manorama Das, District Sports Officer of Golaghat district.

According to the reports, based on a complaint lodged by the Principal of Dhekial Higher Secondary School in Golaghat district, a joint team of Golaghat district police and the officers of Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption caught her red-handed while accepting the bribe amount from the complainant.

The police team has seized the bribe money from the possession of the accused and connected documents were also seized from the office of the District Sports Office, Golaghat.

According to the reports, the state government has given a sanction of Rs 20 lakh for upgradation of the playground of the Dhekial Higher Secondary School, under Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unayan Yojana, out of which Rs 8 lakh was already released and utilized.

In order to get the remaining Rs 12 lakh of the scheme the utilization certificate has to be countersigned by the District  Sports Officer (DSO), Golaghat.

When the complainant approached to the DSO, Golaghat Manorama Das for countersignature of the utilization certificate, as she has supervised the upgradation works of the playground, then accused Manorama Das has demanded a bribe Rs 50000 for her counter signature.

The accused public servant has been arrested and will be forwarded to the Special Court, Assam, Guwahati tomorrow.
