Guwahati/IBNS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Assam government is planning to introduce a new bill for cow protection in the next session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Saturday said that the state government would introduce the bill in the next assembly session.

Addressing the inaugural session of 15th Assam Legislative Assembly, the Assam Governor said: “We will adopt a zero tolerance policy and enforce stringent punishment for the offenders.”

“We all revere and worship cows. It is considered a sacred animal as it nurtures us through life-sustaining milk. In fact, it is a symbol of the divine bounty of the earth. I am happy to inform you that my government plans to introduce the Cow Protection Bill in the next Assembly session. The proposed bill envisages the imposition of a complete ban on the transport of cattle outside the State. Once passed, Assam will join other States of the country who have passed similar Bills,” Mukhi said.

The Assam Governor also underlined the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government’s commitment to recover the lands of Satras and Namghars from illegal encroachment and protect the lands.

“My Government will remain committed to strengthening the Namghars and protecting the rights of the Satras. A task force will be constituted to recover the lands of the Satras and places of worship from the illegal encroachments. We will also continue to strengthen the Satras by providing them grants-in-aid. My Government firmly reaffirms that Assam is the land full of potential and possibility. We will explore these aspects in the right perspective for bringing about speedy growth so as to meet the long-standing hopes and aspirations of our citizens irrespective of their ethnicity, caste, creed or religious background,” the Assam Governor said.
