Mankachar (Assam): An Indian cattle smuggler was killed in BSF personnel firing in Assam’s South Salmara Mankachar district along Indo-Bangladesh border.

The incident took place at Chatkoraibari area along Indo-Bangladesh border on Wednesday where smugglers had tried to transport cows from Indian side to Bangladesh by pulling the cows over the tall barbed wire fence.

While, the BSF personnel deployed along the international border had tried to stop the illegal activities, the smuggler group of both Indian and Bangladesh side had tried to overpower the BSF personnel.

Satya Ranjan Saikia, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of South Salmara Mankachar district said that, around 40 smugglers from both India and Bangladesh side had tried to transport cows from Indian side to Bangladesh by using bamboo made lever or crane.

“We came to know about the incident later. The BSF personnel had first used non-lethal weapons to run away the cattle smugglers, but when the smugglers had tried to attack the BSF personnel had fired. But the BSF personnel didn’t know whether bullets hit someone or not. Later, we came to know that, a person was injured who later succumbed to his injuries. We have received an FIR from the BSF side and we have registered a case. The BSF personnel had fired for their self-defence. Our investigation is on,” the police officer said.

He further said that, the BSF personnel had seized three cattle heads from the area.

The deceased smuggler was identified as Farooq Miya.
