Assam teachers stage protest against state Education minister’s controversial remark about TET
Guwahati, June 18 (IBNS): Over 40,000 Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualified contractual teachers in Assam on Tuesday staged protest across the state against the Assam Education minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya’s recent remark comparing TET pass certificate with a driving licence and demanded the state government to regularise their jobs.
The TET-qualified teachers had protested in Guwahati in front of the Deputy Commissioner office of Kamrup (Metro) district.
The protesting teachers demanded the state government to regularise their jobs.
The teachers had also submitted memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
Over 40,000 Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualified contractual teachers in Assam have started a new campaign ‘Main Bhi Driver’ on social media by protesting against Assam Education minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya’s recent remark comparing the TET pass certificate with a driving licence.
The teachers have added ‘Driver’ as a prefix to their profile names on social media.
The Assam Education minister had recently made the remark during a programme aired on All India Radio when a contractual teacher asked him when their employment would be regularised.
The Assam minister said that, the TET teachers who got their teaching certificates more than five years ago, need to have renewed their documents like as driving licences.
“Despite continuing services in past seven years, the Education minister has not taken any initiative to regularise our jobs. He has made a comedy and fool comment, which hurt us. We urged the Chief Minister of Assam to intervene it and to fulfil our demand,” Rajiv Ranjan Dhar, a protesting teacher said.
