Dubai, Sept 24 (IBNS) At least 200 pilgrims were killed and more than 400 injured on Thursday in a stampede near the Muslim holy city of Mecca, during a congregation of about two million people for performing the annual haj pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia's al-Ekhbariya television reported.

The tragedy took place a day before Eid, during the stoning ceremony held on Street 204 of the camp city of Mina, few km from Mecca.

The news channel also quoted the country's civil defence officials as saying that 390 people were injured in the incident.

Images on television and social media showed pilgrims on stretchers and emergency workers at the site.

Over one lakh Indians were among the millions at the haj ceremony.

This is the second major disaster at Mecca this month after over  100 people were killed on September 18 when a construction crane crashed on the Grand Mosque.
