Attorney General rejects plea seeking criminal proceeding against Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker

New Delhi/UNI: Attorney General (AG) KK Venugopal, top law officer representing the Union of India (UOI), on Sunday rejected a petition seeking sanction for initiating Criminal Contempt of Court proceedings against Bollywood actor Swara Bhasker for her alleged comments on the landmark Ayodhya verdict by the Supreme Court.

After rejection of nod from the AG, petitioner Usha Shetty has now moved and sought the consent of Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta for initiation of contempt of court proceedings against the Bollywood actress for her alleged tweets.

According to the petitioner, the comments allegedly made by Swara on the landmark Ayodhya verdict by the Supreme Court, were contemptuous and thereby, an initiation of contempt of court proceedings should be made against her.

In a historic judgement to a politically-sensitive Ayodhya case which has been raging for almost 70 years, the Supreme Court last year paved way for the construction of Ram Temple in the disputed 2.77 acres of land in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya dismissing the Sunni Waqf Board's claim to the land.

The apex court had also directed that a mosque be built over 5 acres in a prominent location.
