Bengal: BJP fields Priyanka Tibrewal against Mamata Banerjee for Bhabanipur byelection

| @indiablooms | Sep 10, 2021, at 05:36 pm

Kolkata/IBNS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded advocate and its leader Priyanka Tibrewal, who had filed the petition in the case pertaining to post-poll violence in West Bengal, against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the upcoming byelection in the Bhabanipur assembly seat.

The bypoll will be held Sept 30 and the result will be declared on Oct 3.

Slamming Banerjee, BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya tweeted, "Bhabanipore by-poll is not a contest to elect an MLA but to save Bengal from the tyranny of an unelected CM, who has presided over the worst post poll violence in independent India, allowed lumpen elements in her party to murder and rape fellow Bengalis. Pishi must be defeated."

The bypoll was necessitated following the resignation of West Bengal Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay.

Chattopadhyay resigned to pave way for Banerjee to contest and get elected to the assembly after she was defeated by BJP's Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram.

Though the Nandigram result has been challenged by Banerjee in the court, she has plunged into election again to remain in the Chief Minister's post.

Taking a dig at the BJP's candidate, West Bengal Minister and TMC veteran, Firhad Hakim, said, "Who is she (Priyanka Tibrewal)? What contribution does she have to the society? It was earlier also proved that an all-India party can't win elections by creating hype. The same will happen again."

"People in Bhabanipur are eager to cast their votes in favour of Mamata Banerjee," he also said.

The Left Front has fielded CPI-M leader and young lawyer Srijib Biswas as its candidate against Banerjee.

The Congress, which had contested the 2021 assembly polls in an alliance with the Left, has decided not to field a candidate against Banerjee, whose equation with the grand old party has shown signs of improvement of late in the run up to the 2024 General Elections.

The BJP has fielded Milan Ghosh and Sujit Das in Samserganj and Jangipur, where byelection will also be held on Oct 30.
