Kolkata/IBNS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) edged ahead of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in a neck-and-neck contest as counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections began on Monday.

Postal ballot counting is currently underway in the initial phase.

According to early local trends, the BJP is leading in around 60 seats, while the TMC is close behind with 55 seats.

The Congress has taken an early lead in 2 constituencies.

West Bengal has once again emerged as the centre of national political attention, with repolling conducted in Falta, Diamond Harbour and Magrahat Paschim following reports of electoral tension.

The elections witnessed an intense contest primarily between the ruling TMC and the BJP.

Polling was conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
