Kolkata, Mar 13 (IBNS): Five days after Bengali folk singer Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya was killed in a deadly car crash on Durgapur Expressway, Hooghly district police on Sunday midnight arrested the vehicle's driver from Kolkata for alleged negligent driving, officials said.

According to reports, the young driver, Arnab Rao, was nabbed from Bosepukur Road area under Kasba Police Station limits in south part of the city.

"After preliminary investigation, we are sure that Arnab Rao was driving the car at a speed of 110-120 kmph that day and he fell asleep, which might have led the accident," a senior official of Hooghly district police told IBNS.

"We can only confirm the exact reason behind the deadly crash whenever the forensic reports are received," the official said.

Earlier on Mar 7, Bengali folk band Dohaar's lead singer Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya was killed and four other members of the band were seriously injured when their SUV overturned and fell into a roadside ditch on Durgapur Expressway near Malancha area under Gurap Police Station limits in Kolkata's neighbouring Hooghly district of West Bengal.

Driver of the vehicle, Arnab Rao, was also minorly hurt in the mishap and after being discharged from hospital that evening, Rao claimed that he lost the car's control as a truck hit their vehicle from behind.

"Arnab Rao gave false statement before the police and after examining all circumstances and quizzing eye-witnesses, we have come to know that no such incident happened that day," the police officer further said.

However, after being charged under several IPC sections, including 304 (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), Arnab Rao was produced in a local court at Chinsurah in Hooghly district on Monday and was sent to police custody for two days.
