Soon after the news spread her numerous admirers gathered outside her south Kolkata residence. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her grief among others. Sources said the end came after 7 pm in the evening.

Nabaneeta Dev Sen, who studied English and Comparative Literature in Presidency College, Jadavpur University and Harvard University and was known for her erudition and writings that included poems, satires, novels, travelogues and even fables, was the daughter of the poet-couple Narendra Dev and Radharani Devi. In 1959, she married Amartya Sen but they parted ways in 1976.

Nabaneeta Dev Sen lived in Kolkata, in her parental house Bhalo-Basa, where she was born. She breathed her last here.

Her family members said they would provide access to media tomorrow.
