Bihar: Nitish govt brings new law to ban liquor

| | Oct 02, 2016, at 10:12 pm
Patna, Oct 2 (The Bihar Post/IBNS): The state government in Bihar came out with a new law banning sale and consumption of alcohol in the state on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Sunday.

The state Cabinet headed by chief minister Nitish Kumar notified the new law two days after the Patna High Court struck down the Bihar government’s order imposing total prohibition in the state, terming it as “illegal”.

The new law has more stringent provisions for violating liquor ban.

The ruling NItish Kumar government in Bihar had imposed total ban on sale, consumption and manufacture of liquor in April this year after a new excise and prohibition bill was passed from both houses of the Bihar state assembly.

Earlier this month, Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind had given his assent for the ‘draconian’ new Prohibition and Excise Bill, paving the way for the formal implementation of the liquor laws in the state.
