BJP accuses Opposition of playing politics on Assam NRC issue
New Delhi, Aug 3 (IBNS): In a fresh attack on the rival parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has virtually accused the Opposition of playing politics over Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) that excluded over four million people.
The BJP took to Twitter to slam the Opposition.
Sharing a video on the micro-blogging site, the BJP showed how former Indian Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi had favoured cleansing of refugees irrespective of their religions.
The BJP tried to say whether Congress president Rahul Gandhi will follow his late grandmother Indira Gandhi over the issue.
The saffron party has also highlighted West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee's alleged flip-flop over the NRC matter.
In 2005, Mamata, then a lone TMC Lok Sabha MP, spoke in favour of cleansing refugees and also thrown papers at the Speaker's chair when she was not allowed to address the parliament.
The BJP's response came after the publication of the second and final list of Assam' NRC, which was released on July 30, drawn flak from the opposition parties.
The ruling BJP faced wrath from several opposition parties with Mamata even accusing the saffron outfit of leading to a situation of "civil war and bloodbath". Her remarks led to the filing of an FIR in Assam by the BJP youth wing.
The Assam Accord (1985) , which is the basis of the NRC, was signed between the Government of India led by Rajiv Gandhi and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on 15 August 1985 after a six-year agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).
Amid controversy over NRC, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday assured that no Indian citizen will be left out.
Singh made the comment in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the parliament.
He has been quoted by NDTV, "No action will be taken against anyone who can successfully prove their Indian citizenship. I assure everyone that no Indian citizen will be left out. There is absolutely no need to worry."
Singh also said the NRC is a draft and not the final list.
