BJP storms Northeast with historic Tripura win, bags Nagaland; Cong ahead in Meghalaya
Agartala/Kohima/Shillong, Mar 3 (IBNS): Creating history, the Modi wave dismantled the 25-year-long Left regime in Tripura and surged ahead in Nagaland to firm up its stronghold in the northeast belt even as Congress managed to emerge as the gainer of highest number of seats in Meghalaya.
In an unprecedented poll result, the BJP has uprooted the Left from its last surviving bastion in the country if Kerala, where it is in power, is discounted with voter there changing governments every alternate terms.
In Tripura, the BJP has decimated the Manik Sarkar government by securing 40 in a 60-member Assembly with a poll left still in one constituency.
The Left, which secured just 19 seats coming down from earlier 51, could barely counter the "Chalo Paltai (Lets make a change)" slogan raised by the saffron brigade ahead of the election.
The Congress, which was earlier the prime opponent of the Left in Tripura, failed to even open its account in the midst of a bilateral contest between the Left and the Right wings.
Sunil Deodhar, BJP-in-charge of Tripura and hailed as an architect of the magic victory, said: "Support from Assam BJP was tremendous. Because of that moral and actual support we could reach this stage. "
He said BJP highlighted the failure of the Manik Sarkar government with a chargesheet and what would be their performance be like if they come to power.
He thanked the cadres, Assam BJP and Ram Madhav among others for the result in Tripura.
Crediting Assam Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma for the landslide win in Tripura, Madhav said: "It is the blessings of people that led us to this victory. We welcome the historic verdict."
In Nagaland, the BJP, which secured 26 seats, is optimist to form the next government pairing with its previous ally partner NPF which bagged 29 seats. Congress could only manage to get two seats in a 60-member Assembly.
Though Narendra Modi-Amit Shah had aimed for a three-on-three in the northeast polls, Meghalaya appears to be an obstacle.
In a hung Assembly in Meghalaya, the Congress has emerged as the single largest party with 23 seats though not getting the absolute majority. NPP got 15, BJP 4 and Others have bagged 17 seats.
In Meghalaya it could be a government of NPP and BJP with other smaller parties or a Congress led one. It remains to be seen what happens in Meghalaya.
Recounting the experience in Manipur and Goa polls last year, the Congress has sent its top leaders to the state to form the government in any possible way, though the BJP will certainly leave no stone unturned to wrest power in the state.
Post poll-trends, northeast BJP in-charge Ram Madhav said the saffron party will form the government in Nagaland.
With the wins in Tripura and Nagaland, the BJP will be in power in 21 of the total 29 states of the country.
