Srinagar, Oct 20 (IBNS): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swept the Jammu and Kashmir civic polls, the results of which were declared on Saturday, media reports said.

The elections were held in four phases between Oct 8 and 16.

The Independent candidates have won the majority number of seats in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

Out of total 74 seats in Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Independents have won 49 leaving 12 and four others for the Congress and BJP respectively.

However, both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC) had boycotted the civic polls.

Following the BJP's win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "I thank the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their support to the @BJP4JnK in the urban local body elections. I assure the people of the state that the Party will work hard to fulfil the aspirations of the state’s youth and serve the state with utmost diligence."

"I salute the entire team of @BJP4JnK for their stupendous efforts in the local body elections. I am glad that they reached out to every section of society and explained the Party’s development agenda."

Congratulating the workers of the saffron party, BJP president Amit Shah tweeted, "Congratulations to karyakartas of @BJP4JnK unit and state President Shri Ravinder Raina for BJP’s impressive performance in the recently held Urban Local Body polls. BJP has won 212 and 106 wards in Jammu and Kashmir region respectively. You have earned trust of the people."

He said in a follow up tweet, "These results are a reflection of aspiration of people of JnK, who want to move away from politics of strife towards PM Modi's politics of development. I thank people of JnK for their continued support and assure them that BJP will leave no stone unturned to realise their dreams."
