Blue whale washed ashore Maharashtra beach dies, buried

| | Jun 26, 2015, at 05:41 pm
Mumbai, June 26 (IBNS) A 40-foot-long blue whale that washed ashore a Maharashtra beach 17 km from Alibaug on Wednesday and died early on Thursday morning was buried at the same beach after a pit was dug using bulldozers and cranes, reports said.

Authorities were taken aback when a blue whale washed ashore, alive, at the Revdanda coast near Alibaug in  Raigad district- a  rare occasion to see the species in the coast line.

Efforts to get it back into deep waters failed after the mammal died.

Reports said no experts were available to conduct on autopsy on the whale to ascertain the cause of death

It weighed 20 tonnes.

After noticing the whale the local fishermen informed the forest department. More than 50 villagers had even tried to push the whale back into the sea, but owing to its weight, they failed to succeed.

The mammal breathed its last around 4 am on Thursday.
