Border dispute with Assam will be solved amicably: Mizoram CM Zoramthanga

"As per telephonic discussion with Union Home Minister and Assam Chief Minister, we agreed to resolve the Mizoram-Assam border issue amicably through meaningful dialogue," the Mizoram Chief Minister said on Twitter.

The clashes between the security forces of both states and miscreants took place at Lailapur area in Assam’s Cachar district along the Assam-Mizoram border last Monday, in which six of Assam police were killed and 60 others injured.

Assam Police had claimed that a large number of miscreants from Mizoram indulged in stone pelting and attacked government officials stationed at Lailapur to protect the state's land from encroachment.

Meanwhile, Mizoram has filed a case against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his top officials over the deadly border clash.

The First Information Report (FIR) had been filed under various sections including "attempt to murder" at the Vairengte Police Station is Kolasib district of Mizoram, which borders Assam.

Following the FIR, Sarma has asked why a neutral agency can't investigate the matter.

"Will be very happy to join in any investigation. But why the case is not being handed over to a neutral agency, especially when the place of occurrence is well within the constitutional territory of Assam? Have already conveyed this to @ZoramthangaCM ji," Sarma tweeted.

People in Assam have also been asked to not travel to Mizoram as any 'threat to their personal safety is not acceptable' following the violent clashes.

Both the states have refused to honour the summons that were issued by each other following the clashes.

The border conflict has its genesis from the "improper border demarcation".

Two border notifications were issued between the two states during the British rule in India.

Mizoram, which was a part of Assam earlier, became a union territory in 1972 and later a state in 1987.
