Calcutta HC rejects plea seeking stay on Srijit Mukherji's Gumnaami

Kolkata: In a setback for a section of the Netaji family, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday rejected the plea which sought a stay on the release of filmmaker Srijit Mukherji's upcoming Bengali film Gumnaami based on the death and disappearance of Subhas Chandra Bose.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which was filed by All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) leader Debobrata Roy, was rejected by a division bench of Justices Biswanath Sommader and Arindam Mukherjee.

A section of Netaji's family had also accused the director of altering the name of the film from Gumnaami Baba to Gumnaami to get the certification.

Following the verdict, which paved Gumnaami's release on Oct 2 during Durga Puja, filmmaker Srijit said in a statement on Facebook, "The PIL case against the release of Gumnaami at Calcutta High Court has been dismissed. The Honourable Justice Samaddar said how can you accuse anyone of distorting facts when no fact has been established beyond doubt about Netaji's disappearance?

Team #Gumnaami thanks the Honourable Calcutta High Court for this historic judgement and Rajdeep Mazumdar for arguing the case so articulately on the behalf of Prosenjit Chatterjee and myself."

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Chandra Bose, one of Netaji's family members, had earlier locked horns with Srijit accusing the filmmaker of "cheating" by changing the name of the film from Gumnaami Baba to Gumnaami to dupe the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Srijit had also countered the BJP leader with strong words and threatened to take legal action against him.

After the Calcutta High Court rejected the PIL on Wednesday, IBNS had tried to reach out to Bose but he didn't respond.

Gumnaami and its plot

The film Gumnaami is based on the Mukherjee Commission hearings that take us through the various theories on the death and disappearance of one of the greatest freedom fighters of British India Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Tollywood superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee has essayed the character of Netaji in Gumnaami, which is slated to release in both Bengali, Hindi languages. The film also stars Anirban Bhattacharya and Tanusree Chakraborty in significant roles.
