Case filed against Kerala Cardinal over controversial land deal

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 13 (IBNS): A case has been filed against cardinal George Alencherry of Kerala's Syro-Malabar church over allegations of financial irregularities pertaining to a land deal, media reports said.

The case has been filed by the Kochi Central Police on Monday.

Along with Cardinal Alencherry, cases were filed against few other priests as well.

Cardinal Alencherry has been alleged to sell a piece of land at a lower price incurring loss to the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.

Alencherry is the head of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.

The case has been filed by the police following the direction of the Kerala High Court.

A bench in the high court has stated that prima facie evidence shows Alencherry along with some other priests are involved into the alleged financial irregularities.

A senior police official told The Indian Express, "The Cardinal has been made the first accused in the case. Charges under sections 120 (B) for criminal conspiracy, 406 for criminal breach of trust and 415 for cheating under the Indian Penal Code have been filed in the case."
