Centre notifies Inter-Services Organisations Act in major military overhaul

| @indiablooms | May 11, 2024, at 06:37 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: The central government has notified Inter-Services Organisations (Command, Control and Discipline) Act, in one step towards the Unified Theatre Commands, media reports said.

This is set to be the most extensive military overhaul since India's Independence.

The Act was signed by President Droupadi Murmu on August 15, 2023 after the bill was passed by Parliament in the monsoon session last year.

The move is also a step towards the Integrated Theatre Commands, which was delayed by the demise of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, who died in a helicopter crash in 2021.

This also marks a step closer to the fulfillment of the electoral promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its manifesto for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The Act empowers Commanders-in-Chief and Officers-in-Command of ISOs to exercise control over Service personnel, serving under them, for effective maintenance of discipline and administration, without disturbing the unique service conditions of each individual Service.

With the notification, the Act will empower the Heads of ISOs and pave the way for expeditious disposal of cases, avoid multiple proceedings and will be a step towards greater integration & jointness among the Armed Forces personnel.
