Centre provoked external forces to create Basirhat riots: Mamata

Kolkata, July 8 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday attacked the Centre over the spiralling communal violence in state's Basirhat area and said the Centre provoked external forces to create the situation along the sensitive Bangladesh border.

Banerjee announced her government will conduct judicial inquiry into the incident.

"We will conduct a judicial enquiry on Basirhat incident. Action will be taken for spreading fake pics/videos against anyone found guilty. Law will take its course," the CM said.

She said: "I congratulate the people of Bengal for not getting trapped by those spreading rumours and communal hatred. Peace restored."

Highlighting the issue of recent Facebook post that might have triggered rumours, the Chief Minister said: "There is ‘Fakebook’ happening in the name of Facebook. I respect Facebook, not ‘Fakebook'."

She said Bengal is surrounded by several sensitive international borders and one should not tinker with that.

She also dwelt a lot on the Darjeeling situation and blamed the centre for not sending her central forces even after one month to deal with the situation there.

She said the recent violence was a design to disturb peace and she had banned two organisations- one Hindu group and another Muslim group- from holding any public programme.

A delegation of BJP MPs, who were on their way to visit riot-affected areas in Basirhat sub-division, was stopped by police at Birati's Michael Nagar area on Saturday afternoon, reports said.

According to reports, a three-member team of BJP MPs from Delhi, consisting of Om Prakash Mathur, Satyapal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, tried to visit the violence-hit areas, where CrPC section 144 has been imposed.

They were barred by the police from entering North 24 Parganas district. After they tried to move towards the scene disobeying police orders, the three BJP MPs were arrested.

Till the latest update came in, they have been taken to taken to a local police station near Kolkata airport.

Meanwhile, protesting the Basirhat issue, state BJP's rally towards city's downtown Esplanade area has been started from Central Avenue.
