Chennai: 1.5 kg gold worth Rs 50 lakh seized by Customs at airport

Chennai, May 20 (UNI) Customs officials on Monday seized 1.5 kg gold valued at Rs 50 lakh from seven passengers, including a woman, who arrived from Colombo, at the Anna international airport here.

An official release said the customs officials intercepted six male passengers, Sathakathullah (57)of Thuraipakkam, Alagarsamy (63) of Karur, Anvar Batcha(47) of Pudukkottai, Hanif Mohamed (39) of Ramanathapuram, Yasin Arafath

(25) and Syed Ibrahim (40) of Ramanathapuram; and one woman passenger Egambal (42) of Thanjavur, who arrived from Colombo by Spicejet airlines on suspicion of carrying gold.

They were questioned and taken up for personal search.

During examination gold in rubbery form kept concealed in their rectum was recovered from them, along with eight gold bits of 24K weighing 88 grams on their person.

On extraction 1.42 kg gold was recovered from the rubbery spread.

Gold totally weighing 1.51 Kg of 24 K purity valued at Rs. 50 lakh was recovered and the same was seized under Customs Act, 1962.

Further investigation is under progress.
