China opposes Narendra Modi's visit to Arunachal Pradesh

Beijing, Feb 9 (IBNS): China on Saturday opposed Indian PM Narendra Modi's visit to Arunachal Pradesh and said India should refrain from any action that may lead to the escalation of disputes or complicate the boundary question.

China claims Arunahal Pradesh as 'South Tibet', while India says it is an integral part of India and is inseparable from the country and the state has remained the bone of contention between the two neighbours for long.

Modi visited Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday.

He visited the region ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

He addressed public meetings in the region to garner support for his Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the polls.

Opposing his visit, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement: "China's position on the China-India boundary question is consistent and clear-cut. The Chinese government has never recognized the so-called 'Arunachal Pradesh' and is firmly opposed to the Indian leader's visit to the East Section of the China-India boundary."

"China urges the Indian side to bear in mind the common interests of the two countries, respect the interests and concerns of the Chinese side, cherish the momentum of improvement in bilateral relations, and refrain from any action that may lead to the escalation of disputes or complicate the boundary question," it said.
