Col Munindra Rai cremated

New Delhi, Jan 28 (IBNS) Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, the commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, who died fighting terrorists in Kashmir, was cremated here on Wednesday with full military honour.

He was martyred along with head constable Sanjiv Singh in an encounter with Hijbul Mujahideen terrorists in Tral area of Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening.

Col Rai was martyred  just 24 hours after he was awarded a Republic Day gallantry medal.

"He was a very brave officer. He showed that our army officers lead from the front. We killed the two terrorists but it is sad that he was too was killed,"  Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhaag said.

The martyr's Whatsapp status few weeks back read "Make your role so worthy in life that people applaud even after the curtains fall."

Uttar Pradesh government has announced Rs 30 lakhs ex-gratia to the family of the Col Rai who hails from Ghazipur district of the state.


On a specific information regarding presence of armed militants, Awantipora police, 42 RR and 185 CRPF had launched a cordon and search operation in village Hundru.  During the search operation terrorists fired upon the joint search party triggering an encounter. Two terrorists- Sheeraz Hassan Dar and Abid Khan were killed in the  encounter.
