Congress accuses Election Commission of being biased towards BJP

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IBNS): The Congress party on Saturday accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of being biased towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the announcement of dates for assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram.

The party said that the timing for the announcement of the election date was postponed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a rally at Rajasthan's Ajmer.

As soon as the Election Commissioner announces the dates, the Model Code of Conduct comes into force, following which the state government cannot announce any new schemes.

In a tweet, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted: "3 Facts- Draw your own conclusions.

1. ECI announces a PC at 12.30 today to announce election dates to the 5 states.

2. PM Modi is addressing a rally in Ajmer, Rajasthan at 1 PM today.

3. ECI suddenly changes the time of announcement and PC to 3 PM.

Independence of ECI?"

In another tweet, the Congress raised the question if BJP is superior to even the Election Commission.

"Dear ECI,

1.National BJP IT Cell Head tweeted election dates of Knt. even before ECI

2.ECI delinked Gujarat elections from Himachal to enable PM Modi to make a slew of announcements.

3.ECI again deferred PC to enable PM Modi to do the same in Rajasthan

Is BJP the ‘Super EC’?"

However, the ECI said that the move was made for the convenience of all mediapersons so that they could reach its office in time.

The Election Commission earlier in the day announced that assembly polls in Chhattisgarh will be held in two phases on Nov 12 and 20.

Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram will vote to elect a new Assembly on Nov 28.

Assembly polls in Rajasthan and Telangana will be held on Dec 7.

Counting of votes for all the polls will; be held on Dec 11.

Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat announced a date during a press conference where also said: "Model of conduct to come into force in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram with immediate effect."
