Congress begins Satyagraha against CAA at Rajghat in Delhi, Manmohan Singh, Rahul read out Preamble to the Constitution

Delhi/IBNS: The Congress started a "satyagraha" at the Rajghat in New Delhi, where former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former General Secretary of the party Rahul Gandhi read out the Preamble to the Constitution.

Interim General Secretary of Congress Sonia Gandhi, Congress General secretary (UP East) Priyanka Gandhi, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath and Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader are also present.

The protest began at 3 pm today. Earlier, today Rahul Gandhi, who had been out of the country for a while even as the widespread agitation against CAA raged across the country, exhorted the students to join the Congress' satyagraha.

Join me today at 3 PM at Raj Ghat, to protest against the hate & violence unleashed on India by Modi-Shah.— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) December 23, 2019Congress' top leadership had been facing criticism for not coming out in large numbers in support of those taking the lead in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens.

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath also read the Preamble and reiterated his party's stand that the CAA and the NRC will not be implemented in his state.

Chief Minsiter of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot said CAA is a step towards realisation of BJP's "Hindu Rashtra".

The harshest criticism came from poll strategist and JD(U) leader Prashant Kishor. Kishor on Saturday, had taken a jibe at the Senior Congress leaders, saying that they had been "largely absent" from the protests when they were expected to lead the agitation against the CAA and NRC.

"Congress is not on the streets and its top leadership has been largely absent in the citizens' fight against CAA-NRC. The least the party could do is to make all Congress CMs join other CMs who have said that they will not allow NRC in their states (sic)," Mr Kishor tweeted on Friday, referring to the amended law and the National Register of Citizens.

"Or else these statements mean nothing," he added, pointing to a statement by Congress president Sonia Gandhi last week against the government over the crackdown on protests.

On Sunday, Priyanka Gandhi visited the kin of the victims killed in firing during CAA agitation in Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.
