About Sonia Gandhi
Sonia Gandhi is an Indian politician and one of the most influential leaders of the Indian National Congress.
Born in Italy on December 9, 1946, as Antonia Edvige Albina Maino, she married former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1968 and later became an Indian citizen.
After Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991, Sonia Gandhi initially stayed away from active politics but formally joined the Congress party in 1997.
She became Congress president in 1998 and went on to become the party’s longest-serving chief, leading it for more than two decades across different terms.
Under her leadership, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) came to power in 2004 and again in 2009.
Though widely expected to become Prime Minister in 2004, Sonia Gandhi declined the post and nominated Manmohan Singh instead.
She is the mother of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, continuing the Nehru-Gandhi political legacy associated with Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
