#CongressBachaoRahulHatao trends on Twitter amid speculations of Rahul Gandhi's resignation

New Delhi, May 25 (IBNS): Amid speculations of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's resignation after the poll fiasco, #CongressBachaoRahulHatao starts trending on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Shraddha Singh tweeted, "What has happened to people ?? #CongBachaoRahulHatao Trending? Rahul Gandhi ji, we assure you that the BJP will not let injustice happen to you."

Akbar Basha said: "#CongBachaoRahulHatao Raga be like: Woh BJP ko jeetane ke liye BJP me rehna zaroori hai kya"

Twitter user in the name Shankar tweeted, "#CongBachaoRahulHatao Why is this trending?!! In 2014 Rahul helped BJP win 282 seats! From 2014 - 2018 Rahul helped BJP win most of the assembly elections! In 2019 Rahul helped BJP win 303 seats! What more do you want people?!!"

Another Twitter use in the name Manu said: "After State elections 2018, Rahul baba saw light at the end of the tunnel. After General elections 2019, Rahul baba realised the light was of the incoming train. #CongBachaoRahulHatao"

Rahul Gandhi offers to resign?

After the Congress was decimated by Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, whose results came out on May 23, Rahul Gandhi had reportedly offered to resign as the party president.

Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee (CWC)'s meeting is underway on Saturday where Gandhi's fate might be decided.

The CWC meet is attended by Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Congress fails to rise after 5 years

After registering the worst performance since Independence in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, the Congress failed to rise to Narendra Modi's popularity as the country's oldest outfit won just 52 seats.

In the last General Elections, the Congress had won 44 seats, the lowest tally ever.

Rahul Gandhi's performance as Congress President

After taking charge of the party, Rahul Gandhi's Congress could give BJP a run-for-their money in the state elections in 2017.

In Dec 2018, the Congress had managed to win back three states- Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh- in the Hindi heartland from the BJP. But the good fortune waned once the battle spilled into the national sphere.

Adding a pinch of salt to the hurt, Rahul Gandhi failed to win even his Uttar Pradesh's Amethi seat and was defeated by Union Minister Smriti Irani.
