Cop, villager killed in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr after cow slaughter sparks violence

Bulandshahr, UP, Dec 3 (IBNS):  A mob outrage over reports of cow slaughter claimed the life of a police officer and a villager as Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh witnessed spiralling violence on Tuesday.

The body of the cop- identified as Subodh Kumar Singh- was found hanging out of a police vehicle after a mob attacked the policemen with stones and firearms.

The policeman was allegedly shot dead by the mob, according to an NDTV report which said the violence was sparked by reports of discovery of 25 carcasses of cows near the police station.

A villager was also killed in the violence in which several other cops were seriously injured.

Several vehicles were burnt down while the police station was set ablaze, said reports and video footage of the incident.

One report said slain police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh was the investigating officer in the Mohammad Akhlaq lynching case of Dadri in 2015.

On September 28, 2015, a mob had allegedly barged into the house of Mohammad Akhlaq in Dadri and in the assault he later died.

Bulandshahr district magistrate Anuj Jha has confirmed that Kumar died from bullet injuries in his head, reports said.

Villagers had gathered outside the police station to demonstrate against cow slaughter and threw stones at the police station.

A Special Investigation Team has been formed to investigate the cow slaughter and the mob violence. Security has been tightened in the area with five companies of Rapid Action Force and six companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary, reported NDTV.

The violence reportedly occurred hours after carcasses of the cows were found dumped in a forest area outside the village.

"Around 400 locals had collected there with tractor trolleys with the carcasses. The mob pelted stones. The Inspector was hit on the head and a couple of other policemen also injured," said Anand Kumar, a senior officer of the state police, told the channel.

Anuj Kumar Jha, the district magistrate, told NDTV: "Some people took the bodies of the animals and tried to block the road. The policemen were attacked when they tried to get the road opened."

India Today TV, citing sources, said the murdered police officer had arrested some of the accused in the 2015 Dadri case.
