Covid-19: Fresh allocation of Remdesivir made till May 23 to ensure adequate supply

Gowda said that Remdesivir's overall production and allocation has been ramped up substantially.

“Considering the requirement of Remdesivir in various states & UTs and to ensure its adequate availability substantial increase has been made in overall production and allocation,” Gowda tweeted.

The drug, which is used in the treatment of critically-ill Covid-19 patients, has been in high demand in many states with many complaining of supply shortages since the beginning of the second wave.

The data shared by the minister shows 76,00,000 vials of the drug have been allocated to states and UTs during the period of  April 21 and May 23.

Of these, two states--Maharashtra was given the maximum of 14,92,000 vials and Karnataka, which got 10 lakh vials from the centre--were at the top of the allocation.

Maharashtra continues to report the highest Covid-19 cases in the country even as the daily new cases are declining in the state since the past few days.

 Karnataka has surfaced as the new Covid-19 hub in India and currently has the highest number of people sick among all states.

Delhi received 2,80,000 vials, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat received 625,000 vials and 5,10,000 vials respectively, the data shared by Gowda showed.

In the previous allocation, Centre had given 53 lakh vials to states and union territories until May 16, after which 23 lakh more doses had been allotted.
