Curfew imposed in parts of Varanasi lifted

Varanasi, Oct 5 (IBNS): A curfew, that was imposed in parts of Varansi city in Uttar Pradesh on Monday for a brief period following violent clashes between protesters and the police, has been lifted later in the evening, media reports said.

However, it has been announced that all schools and colleges in the city will remain closed even on Tuesday.

The violence took place amid protests against a police action on Sept 22 on a religious procession during the immersion of Ganesha idols.

The protest on Monday was taken out by seers. The protest, which was later accompanied by violence, led to setting ablaze a police booth and six vehicles, including two police jeeps.

Some unidentified men also resorted to stone pelting resulting in the injury of 22 people, including 6 police personnel, media reports said.

Reports also said that 29 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

The stone-pelting incident also triggered a minor stampede.  Police thereby used batons against the protesters.

Curfew has been imposed in several areas in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency including places like Dashashwamedh, Chowk, Kotwali and Luxa.
