New delh, Sept 18 (IBNS): The 1st Hero Sun Down Half Marathon in New Delhi was organised by Let's Run Gurgaon as part of the celebrations for Mexican National Day marked on Sept 16.

Runners participated in three categories: 5K, 10K and 21.09K.

For the 21.09K Barefoot category, or “Tarahumara challenge”, some participants ran absolutely barefoot, just as the Mexican Rarámuri.

The Rarámuri or Tarahumara are native people of northwestern Mexico, renowned for their long-distance running abilities. The word “Rarámuri” means "runners on foot" or "those who run fast".

A devoted runner herself, Ambassador Melba Pría ran in the 21.09K category.

“A healthy environment implies a healthy lifestyle,”  she said, “Running for our Independence Day is about doing something different to celebrate and promote health and fitness in our city."

Ambassador Pría will run the Berlin Marathon on Sept 25 to support Indian Cancer Society, a cause for which she has already raised INR 7.5 lakhs.

After the race, runners and their families and friends celebrated in a pleasant gathering filled with Mexican spirit and music at Indian Mountaineering Foundation.

All finishers were awarded medals engraved with Mexican artwork.

The 1st Hero Sun Down Half-Marathon was the first event of its kind in the Chanakyapuri area, as well as the first one to be supported by a diplomatic mission. The run was sponsored by Hero, Genpact, Max Healthcare and Indian Mountaineering Foundation.
