New Delhi/UNI: Two children among four people have been killed after a massive fire broke out in a residential building in the Shastri Nagar area of Shahdara in New Delhi in the early hours of Thursday.

According to the police officials, a total of nine people, including three men, four women, and two children, were rescued and have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

"We received information from the hospital that four people, including two children and a married couple, died due to suffocation," a senior police officer said.

"The police received a call at Geeta Colony Police Station about a major fire at Shastri Nagar, near Geeta Colony, at around 5:30 a.m.

"We immediately informed the Delhi fire service department, and four fire tenders, a police team, ambulances, and PCR vans were rushed to the spot," he said.

"The fire broke out in a four-story residential building that has a car-parking facility on the ground floor. The fire started from the parking lot, and the smoke engulfed the entire building," the police said.

"Fire officials managed to douse the flames despite the narrow street," it said.

Further investigation is ongoing, the police said.
