Delhi High Court rejects P Chidambaram's anticipatory bail plea in INX Media Case

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IBNS): Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday received a jolt as the Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in the corruption and money laundering cases related to the INX Media scandal.

Justice Sunil Gaur had reserved the decision on January 25. During the arguments, both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate had opposed Chidambaram's plea on the ground that his custodial interrogation was required as he was evasive during questioning, News 18 reported.

Chidambaram has been grilled a number of times in this case in the past.

The central probe agency registered the PMLA case on the basis of a CBI FIR and had alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs. 305 crore in 2007, when P Chidambaram was the finance minister.

Karti Chidambaram, the son of the former Union Minister, was arrested earlier by the CBI, the other central agency investigating the case, for allegedly taking money to facilitate the FIPB clearance to INX Media in 2007. He was granted bail subsequently.

The agency has alleged that Karti Chidambaram received money from INX Media, using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against it in a case of violation of FIPB conditions to receive investments from Mauritius.
