Demonetisation: Banned Rs 500 notes worth 80 lakh recovered in Kolkata, 2 held
According to reports, a traffic sergeant stopped a taxi for security checks at Brabourne Road area under Howrah Bridge Traffic Guard limits and recovered as many as two sacks filled with banned Rs 500 notes.
Two passengers of the taxi- Saurav Mukherjee and Sushil Kumar Shukla- were apprehended as they failed to show valid documents against the currency.
According to police officials, the taxi driver told the police that those persons boarded his taxi from Golabari area in Kolkata's twin city Howrah and were going towards M. G. Road.
"During primary interrogation, these men claimed that the owner of the money was Kishen Bajaj, a businessman of city's Posta area, and they were going to drop the money before him," a senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS.
"As the duo couldn't produce valid documents against the money, we have arrested them under CrPC section 41 and they will be produced to a city court tomorrow," the official added.
Days after the Central government's demonetisation order came into force, two sacks filled with torn and mutilated banned Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes worth over 2 crore were recovered from a garbage dump in south Kolkata's Tollygunge area on Nov 13.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police reportedly booked two middle-aged men on Wednesday for depositing FICN (Fake Indian Currency Notes) worth 24,000 rupees in a local bank.
According to reports, Santosh Singh and his brother Loknath Singh, who were the residents of city's Lake Town area, went to an UCO Bank's branch at Ganesh Chandra Avenue area and allegedly tried to deposit at least 24 fake 1000 Rs notes.
After holding them, bank officials called in the police they duo was arrested later.
"They were trying to deposit 2 lakh rupees in the bank, out of which twenty-four 1000 Rs notes were FICN," a senior official of Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF) told IBNS.
"They will be produced before a special court tomorrow," the officer further said.
