Demonetisation claimed more lives than Uri attack: Ghulam Nabi Azad
Speaking at the Upper House, Azad said, "I think some 40 people have died so far as a result of the note ban decision. Not even half of this number of deaths where recorded during the Uri attack by Pakistani militants."
The comment to link the Uri attack, in which 19 Indian Army soldiers were martyred, has drawn severe flak from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which termed the statement as "anti-national".
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said that Azad's remark is “atrocious, anti-national and an insult to the martyrs.”
Opposition parties, led by the Congress, earlier in the day, forced multiple adjournments in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as the demonetisation issue kicked up a storm in Parliament.
In the Upper House, Opposition members raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his government's decision to demonetise Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes.
Lok Sabha also witnessed an utter chaos as members discussed illegal mining, whereas many members of the Opposition demanded a debate on note ban.
