Elderly woman commits suicide fearing Coronavirus infection in Punjab

Phagwara/UNI: A 65-year-old widow, suffering from common cold, reportedly committed suicide by consuming celphos at her residence in nearby village Khurampur on Saturday night over fear of getting infected by Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the police said on Sunday.

Elderly women, identified as Santosh Kaur, even asked her daughters not to visit her in the apprehension of any infection.

Punjab Agro Industrial Corporation Chairman Joginder Singh Maan visited the village to condole the family and she even wrote a suicide note before committing suicide, he said.

Though a team of doctors, led by Phagwara Senior Medical Officer Dr Kamal Kishore, after getting information about her unwellness visited the house and medically examined her.

When contacted Kapurthala Civil Surgeon Dr Jasmeet Bawa told UNI that the deceased seemed be in depression as medical team visited her yesterday did not diagonosed any ailment.

When contacted Phagwara Deputy Superintendent of Police said the deceased left a suicide note in which she said that she was ending her life on her own.

The DSP said as per preliminary examination, she showed no symptoms of coronavirus even. The deceased left a suicide note before ending her life in which She expressed her apprehension about her ailment and wrote her bacteras are increasing, the DSP said.

Though the police, along with health officials, were investigating the matter, but the police has registered a case under section 174 CRPC unatural death and sent the body for post-morterm examination to local Civil Hospital.

The body of the deceased was handed over to her family members after conducting autopsy in Civil Hospital on Sunday Evening.
Interestingly despite suicide note neither blood samples of the deceased were taken nor the police acted accordingly.
