Eminent author UR Ananthamurthy dies at 82
Bangalore, Aug 22 (IBNS): Eminent writer and Jnanpith awardee Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy breathed his last on Friday.
He was 82.
He died at a Bangalore hospital where he was undergoing treatment for kidney failure.
The veteran author was in critical condition and was on multi-monitor support.
He was hospitalised for infection and fever 10 days ago.
Being a contemporary writer and critic in the Kannada language, Ananthamurthy was considered as one of the pioneers of the Navya movement.
Besides, the Jnanpith Award, he is also the recipient of the the Padma Bhushan award.
He was the Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala during the late 1980s.
He was one of the finalists of Man Booker International Prize for the year 2013.
Prime Minister Narednra Modi mourned his demise.
"Shri UR Ananthamurthy's demise is a loss to Kannada literature. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace," Modi tweeted.
