External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar meets Chinese Foreign Minister, discusses Informal Summit

Beijing, Aug 12 (UNI) External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, who is on a three-day visit to China, on Monday met State Councillor and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi and discussed preparations for the upcoming high level exchanges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to hold their second Informal Summit in India in Octoberlater this year.

The first Informal Summit was hosted by China in April 2018.

Prior to his visit, an Ministry of External Affairs statement has said in Delhi, "During his stay in China, Dr Jaishankar will also exchange views with the Foreign Minister of China on the entire gamut of bilateral relations- including upcoming high-level visits later this year, as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest."

He also met Vice-President of China Wang Qishan on Monday.

Dr Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to co-chair the second meeting of the India-China High Level Mechanism on Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges.

This is Dr Jaishankar's first visit to China after assuming office. Dr Jaishankar has been to Beijing as India's envoy between 2009 and 2013.

In the first Informal summit at Wuhan, the two leaders focused on broadening India-China ties which will include enhancing people-to-people contacts and expanding cooperation in trade and investment.

In the Wuhan summit, Modi and President Xi Jinping were keen to take steps aimed at avoiding a Doklam-like situation in the future.

The then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had said in Parliament that both India and China could resolve the 73-day standoff at Doklam by maturity.
