Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report against a social media user for making a 'lewd' online remark against Kirti Chakra Captain Anshuman Singh's widow Smriti Singh.

According to an officer, the FIR has been registered by the force's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act, reported Hindustan Times.

The BNS came into effect on July 1.

It replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The social media user, a Delhi resident, has been booked under Section 79 (word/gesture/act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the BNS and Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the IT Act, reported Hindustan Times.

National Commission for Women posted on X: " NCW has recently taken suo motu cognisance over a lewd remark made on widow of Kirti Chakra Captain Anshuman Singh. Delhi Police has registered An FIR in the matter."

Earlier on Monday, NCW condemned the behaviour of the social media user and demanded police action.

"National Commission for Women (NCW) has identified a lewd and derogatory comment made by Ahmad K. from Delhi on a photo of a Kirt Chakra Captain Anshuman Singh's widow. This act violates Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000," NCW said.

Anshuman Singh received the posthumous Kirti Chakra, the country's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

The deceased soldier's wife Smriti Singh and mother Manju Singh recently received the posthumous Kirti Chakra from President Droupadi Murmu.

Captain Anshuman Singh was posted with the 26 Punjab as a medical officer in the Siachen Glacier area.

He died in a fire tragedy in Siachen last year.
