Flood: World Bank officials visit Kashmir

Jammu, Feb 2 (IBNS) A meeting was held between the representatives of the state government and the World Bank team on Monday in which discussions were held on the issue of financial support needed for rebuilding the damaged infrastructure and rehabilitation of the people besides required help to revive the business community which suffered on account of the recent floods in the state, officils said.

The state government team was headed by Principal Secretary Planning and Development B. R. Sharma and the World Bank was led by Saurabh Dani.

Principal Secretary Finance B. B. Vyas welcomed the World Bank team and informed that the state government is looking forward to the support and assistance from the World Bank to rebuild damaged public and private infrastructure and for rehabilitation of  the flood affected families.

On the occasion, Commissioner Secretary Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Vinod Kaul gave a detailed presentation with regard to the September 2014 floods.

The World Bank team was informed that around 2.54 lakh private structures were damaged during the floods while damage to the public infrastructure has been estimated to be more than Rs.6500 crore, officials said.

The World Bank team has assured full support and assistance to the state government and informed that it is fully aware of the losses suffered by the people in the north Indian state because of the floods.

The team said that they will carry out an analysis of the loss assessment within few days which will give them an overall view as to how the State Government can be provided financial support.

They informed that the report shall be submitted to the Indian government followed by the discussions with the Union Ministry of Finance
to finalize the proposal of the state government.

The team assured the state government that they are ready to support the people who have lost their houses, livelihood and their main focus is on
rehabilitation of the affected families, revival of the business activities and also rebuilding of the public infrastructure such as roads and  bridges among others,  official said.

The team also held sectoral discussions with different administrative secretaries for further details that will help them in preparing the report.

The team decided to visit the affected areas of the state and in this regard one team proceeded to Srinagar which will remain stationed there for two to three days and will visit  the flood affected districts.

The other team which is currently in Jammu will visit Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu districts.
